- Can you detail your entrepreneurial journey, what motivated you to become an entrepreneur and what are your main goals for Mangalam over the next five years?
I am a second generation entrepreneur after my mother, Madhvi Bhandari, who founded this business. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Commerce and a Liberal Arts degree from Penn State University, USA, I worked for a few years before starting my entrepreneurial journey. I believe this path gives me the opportunity to use my technical expertise and turn my creative ideas into reality. At Mangalam, I lead sales and marketing with a strong focus on identifying and developing potential new business opportunities. I envision 10x growth for the business and expansion into Europe and the Canadian region over the next five years. I plan to explore the legal and healthcare segments to identify new opportunities and expand permanently in the IT industry. I firmly believe that customer focus is the centerpiece of any business. At Mangalam, we believe in the customer first approach and in line with this fundamental philosophy, we offer customized solutions tailored to the requirements of our customers. We are hiring aggressively as we are growing at a rapid pace and will continue to do so for the near future.
- Mangalam was recently accredited as a ‘Great Place to Work’. Please let us know what steps you have taken to foster a great workplace.
At Mangalam, we have undertaken several initiatives to foster a conducive work culture and make each colleague an integral part of our family. At Mangalam, we focus on five dimensions of a high performance culture: i) credibility, ii) fairness, iii) respect, iv) camaraderie and v) pride. Mangalam strives to create a strong work culture and pride in its employees and achieves this goal through cross-departmental employee engagement activities, an open door policy and other initiatives such as annual health checks, an anti-sexual harassment committee, rewards and recognition programs. and a hybrid work environment. As part of employee engagement initiatives and with the aim of giving back to society, we raised awareness about the Indian military, health, environment and women’s empowerment through marathons and corporate events. Our workplace values veterans and we have taken many steps to help them re-enter the workforce.
- Are there specific measures adapted to women? Please share details
At Mangalam, around 30% of our workforce is made up of women. As part of our innovative initiative, we have set up an exclusive night shift platform for women to provide opportunities for those with work constraints. I have also inspired my female colleagues in the organization to become more empowered and take on more leadership roles in their professional and personal lives. We regularly hold one-on-one sessions with female employees to encourage them to be more empowered and take on leadership roles in all aspects of their lives, not just in the workplace.
- What is your vision of the Indian IT industry? Is the government doing enough to encourage the sector?
India is a sought-after destination for IT services due to its demographic dividend, relative affordability of land and labor, and favorable government impetus. Over the past few decades, infrastructure upgrades pushed by central and state governments and the emergence of new era technologies have given a boost to the Indian IT industry. The role of the government has indeed been decisive in giving impetus to the sector. It is now up to IT industry players to sustain the growth momentum. Currently, the IT sector contributes around 9% of India’s GDP, which is sure to grow and fuel the dream of reaching a $5 trillion economy by 2025. But few problems urgently need to be addressed, such as closing the skills gap, stopping the growing attrition rate and taking more initiatives to encourage women to take up leadership positions in the sector. The IT industry also needs specific guidelines to foster a hybrid work environment, run more interactive sessions to build stronger teams, and improve the happiness quotient in the workplace.
- What key trends do you foresee in the post-COVID world?
The pandemic has accelerated digitalization and increased demand for IT services. Today, almost every business relies on a robust IT infrastructure. Sectors such as healthcare, legal services, etc., have seen steady growth, which, in turn, has also boosted demand in the BPO segment. At Mangalam, we are poised to grow and keep pace with market growth. The pandemic has also ushered in a hybrid work model in which technology will play a central role in fostering collaboration among remote workforces in dispersed geographies. The IT landscape is changing rapidly; fierce competition means that customer focus will be the biggest differentiator for IT companies. Additionally, agile companies that encourage innovation and invest in their employees will maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The rapidly changing employment landscape has also underscored the importance of upskilling and reskilling the workforce to remain relevant in the labor market.
- Finally, what advice would you give to budding female entrepreneurs?
Believe in yourself and don’t let anything stop you from achieving your dreams.
