How to turn off (or turn on) landscape mode on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus home screen

With the iPhone 6 Plus, 6s Plus, and 7s Plus, you have the option of using the Home screen in landscape mode (with iPhone held horizontally) or portrait mode (iPhone held vertically).

Considering the preponderance of videos taken vertically, you might not want the home screen to toggle when your iPhone is in a horizontal position. Of course, it will move in an upright position when you move your phone, but you might have reasons why the home screen doesn’t change at all. (Because boring).

Or maybe you’re like me and want the home screen to toggle between landscape and portrait, but it seems stuck on portrait. It will not tip over.

(To help you decide: Some Apple apps, like Contacts and Mail, display a two-pane interface in landscape mode. Other apps, like Music and Activty, seem to work only in portrait mode.)

You can use the orientation lock in Control Center (swipe up from the bottom of the screen; the Control Center icon is the padlock icon in the top right), but there is a another way to do it. It’s actually not an intuitive setting to adjust, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t figured it out for yourself. Also, if you want to turn off landscape change, be aware that this is a tradeoff, as you will find out in the steps below.

Activate / deactivate landscape switching

  1. Press the Settings application.
  2. Faucet Display and brightness.
  3. In the list of settings, find Display zoom. Under this heading you should see Seen. Tap on it.
  4. You will find two tabs to select from:
    • If you select Standard, this will allow your home screen to switch between landscape and portrait modes. If that’s what you want, press Standard.
    • If you select Zoomed, this will disable landscape change, but everything on your iPhone Plus screen will appear just a little bigger. If you are satisfied, press Zoomed.

  5. Faucet Adjust top right. Your iPhone Plus will restart to implement the changes.
